Train of Thought

Part of my Idioms project

Initially stitched the image into plain canvas,
then used Photoshop layering for a collage effect

Blink of an Eye

As an extension to my Idioms project, I experimented with photography

Using an overhead projector and acetate layering I projected the image of a clock face onto an eye

Letterpress

Today I attended a letterpress workshop to extend my Idioms project

Wednesday 24 November 2010

Idioms

This brief was to illustrate traditional English idioms

I chose 'train of thought' and 'in the blink of an eye'

Monday 22 November 2010

Big Issue

After specialising in the Graphics area, my first brief was to create a series of campaign posters concerning a big issue

I looked at eating disorders,
and used a combination of photography and Photoshop

Site & Scale

To extend my Alternative Image Making project I explored the possibility of translating my work onto a larger scale, using a different medium more suited to my chosen environment

I decided to use icing.

Alternative Image Making

My self-directed study assignment was to create at least 2 'alternative images' of household objects, without using conventional drawing materials.

I chose to do a cake stand and teacups, partly because they are widely recognised shapes but also because these are the type of objects I am mostly interested in - beautiful, aesthetic and decorative.

I used collage and embroidery to illustrate my design, using layers of wallpaper, brown paper and paper doilies.

Experimental Drawing

As part of my investigation into drawing, I experimented with using unusual methods.

I created 'finger extensions' by attaching pencils to my fingers, and then tried drawing this way, dragging my hand across the sheet to create a series of lines

Handmade Paints

Today I mixed and used my own paints.
I used various pigments such as beetroot, blueberries, rasberries and turmeric to create a range of colours

Handmade Brushes

Today I was set the challenge of drawing with handmade tools.

I created a set of unique instruments to draw with,
these included brushes made from grass, cotton wool and even lavender.

Cotton Wool

Sponges

Grass and Lavender

These gave really interesting effects; they were easy to use yet gave unique properties.
I spent a while experimenting with my tools to create a catalogue of mark-making.

I then selected some of the most effective techniques and used these to draw my tools.

Lavender - drawing

I really enjoyed using instruments that I'd created myself, and will definitely consider using these again within my work.

Personal Altered Computer

For the MMU summer project brief I was required to make a computer.

I could choose to use any material or method I wanted,
and as this was a personal project, it should reflect me in some way.

I decided to make mine from a vintage floral fabric (I love all things old-fashioned!)
